Our movement through space and the ability to get from “point A to point B” is one of the markers of independence. So helping a loved one manage various levels of mobility is a key factor in helping your loved one navigate the changes his or her movement level. Here’s a helpful Q&A from Doctor Marion that to get YOU motivated about moving too!
Q: My best friend is now 82. He was a world traveler at one time, but now he’s not interested in anything. Can going out close to home or to see a local event be okay for this former globetrotter?
~ Becket in New York
A: When an older person can no longer travel long distances, our job as caregivers is to help them stay involved with the world around them. Sometimes there are physical constraints, other times the constraints are financial. The good news is that both can be overcome.
Within most local communities, there are inexpensive and nearby events to attend, yet most people do not explore their own community. I’m talking about going to a high school sporting event, a local theater group performance, or even a nearby fair or farmers market. Local book stores often have readings, book clubs and book signings, too. You’d be surprised at how much positive energy even the smallest local outing can bring to your friend.
