Companies Recognizing the Sandwich Generation and Its Needs
The challenges facing the Sandwich Generation seem to become overwhelming as family caregivers try to balance raising a family with caring for elderly parents and maintaining a career. However, many larger companies are beginning to recognize the unique challenges facing these selfless individuals and have started creating programs to allow telecommuting, flexible work schedules, referral assistance programs and elder care benefits. According to a survey, more than three in five (62 percent) companies have made policy changes to better accommodate working caregivers, parents and Sandwich Generation members.
“Programs that support work-life balance are attractive to professionals, especially members of the Sandwich Generation — people caring for both children and elderly parents,” said Diane Domeyer, executive director of OfficeTeam. “For smaller firms that may not have as much flexibility in adjusting salaries as larger organizations, offering non-financial of benefits like flex-time and telecommuting can level the playing field.”
If you’re in the middle of trying to maintain your work-life balance, make sure to talk with your employer or HR Manager. It’s estimated that between 10 and 15 million family caregivers currently belong to the Sandwich Generation and that number will continue to grow as the Baby Boomers continue to age.
