Mental Decline on the Rise: How Brain Fitness Can Help
We’ve all heard the adage “if you don’t use if, you lose it.” This applies to the body, but the same applies to the brain: without regular mental workouts, memory decline – and worse – will occur. That’s where mental or brain fitness comes in. We are not talking mental health or memory problems – diagnosing and dealing with serious physical conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s requires professional help. No, what we are talking about are simple things we all can do to optimize the number of marbles we have in our golden years. I’ve included a few below, but will present more in future blogs.
1. Regular mental activity that is varied and challenging is the key. And you don’t need fancy software or video games to do it. Simple activities like crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or learning a new hobby, have been proven to keep you mentally fit longer and better.
2. Take care of your body. Remember Tomogotchi? This little electronic toy died if you didn’t pay attention to it. Well, that’s your brain too. In order for someone to be at home, you need to take care of those gray cells in your head. Some handy tips for keeping your brain healthy are:
Diet – Stick to fruits, vegetables, dairy and unprocessed grains, as well as meat or vegan alternatives. Eat fish, which contains omega 3 fatty acid, a key component for healthy cognitive function. Make sugary sweets rare, and for caffeine, try green or black tea instead. There are some bad foods that are actually good for you – like dark chocolate and red wine.
Sleep – The mind should rest between 7-8 hours each night to repair damaged cells in the body and improve memory.
Stress – It happens to the best of us. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be under control. Be sure to plan ahead for all your projects, take a break from stress every hour. Breathe deeply and slowly to bring your heart back to a steady and calm pulse. If stress is recurring or frequent, consider what it is that makes you unhappy in your environment.
