Ask Amy on “Talk of the Nation”

Amy Dickinson Amy Dickinson, of “Ask Amy” fame, recently appeared on National Public Radio’s “Talk of the Nation” to discuss how to talk to parents about aging. Also included in the discussion were Joseph Coughlin, director and founder of the MIT AgeLab, and callers from around the country. Participants shared similar concerns addressed in AGIS’ Forum, such as reluctance to consider moving, safety concerns and finding local help.

“I get a ton of letters about this,” Dickinson said. “They don’t know what to do, and often there’s tension between siblings about what to do.”

Coughlin added, “We’re not talking about the cold, calculated issue of home safety or driving safety. We’re really talking about the home as independence and dignity, or driving as really about personal freedom. …We’ve really got to redefine our discussion with our parents to reflect what it is they are trying to protect: their independence, their freedom.”

Marsha, a caller from Boston suggested enlisting the parent in helping out, by take some steps to plan for their future, as a way of easing the burden on the entire family. Dickinson agreed, advising listeners to look for help through their local office on aging. You can also search for local services at AGIS.com.
